Advent & Christmas Services
In addition to our regular Weekend and Weekday service offerings the Advent season offers of an extra depth of spiritual growth as we prepare our hearts and minds, not only for the coming of the Christ Child at Christmas but, also, for his glorious appearing at the end of the ages.
We begin our observance of the Advent Season a few weeks early here at Transfiguration because we believe the extra time is helpful to fully embrace all that the season offers. Advent is the start of the new liturgical year. Join us at the Advent Festival to kick off the season. Learn about the prophets who prepared the way. Read the Gospel of Matthew and soak up the beauty of Lessons and Carols.
Angel Tree
Bring joy to a family in need this Christmas by adopting an Angel. Visit the Angel Tree in the Gathering Space through the end of November and support a client of our Food Pantry or a Vogel family experiencing food insecurity and homelessness.
Regular Services
Our regularly scheduled worship services on the Weekends and Weekdays continue unchanged during Advent. View Service Times Here
Prepare the Way of the Lord
Advent with the Prophets
November 16 – 30 | December 7 – 21, 10:15 – 11:00am in Roper Hall
The Prophets are messengers of Advent. Throughout history, the prophets helped the people of God hold onto hope and look for salvation: they spoke of a messiah who would bring release to captives, justice to the oppressed, and light to all trapped in darkness. Join us for a series of discussions between our clergy and special guests as we delve into the rich tradition of the prophets to hear again their hope for our weak and weary world.
First Wednesday Healing Service
December 3, 6:00pm in Holy Cross Chapel
Not everyone can easily sing "Joy to the World" at this time of year. Some are grieving the absence of a loved one, while others are weighed down by other forms of sadness or worry. For all those who carry heavy hearts this December, we invite you to join us for a special Healing Eucharist with Unction on December 3.
Reading the Gospel of Matthew
December 6, 1:00 – 4:00pm on the Labyrinth
Each Advent we transition to a new lectionary cycle featuring a different gospel. As we begin a year in the Gospel of Matthew (Year A), you're invited to experience a read-through of the entire gospel. Volunteers take turns, going chapter by chapter, reading from our Heritage Edition of The Saint John's Bible. Give yourself a holy gift this Advent and hear the whole story of Jesus Christ from beginning to end.
St. Nicholas Visits
December 7
Continuing a beloved tradition, St. Nicholas will once again visit Transfiguration this Advent. Though connected with a certain "jolly old elf," the true saint of history inspires us to give, rather than receive, at Christmas. St. Nicholas will be available for photos on the labyrinth between services and will also visit children's classrooms.
Advent Lesson & Carols
December 7, 5:00pm
Always a highlight of the season, experience again this gorgeous service of Scripture and music. This year we will be joined by our sister churches, Ascension and St. Thomas the Apostle, and we will be honored to welcome Bishop Wayne Smith for his final visit after seven years of loving service to us. Before we hurry to the manger in Bethlehem, let us remember the words of the prophets who foretold the Savior's birth. A reception follows.
Taizé for Advent
December 14, 6:00pm on the Labyrinth
Advent is a season of prayerful introspection, yet we easily get lost in the holiday frenzy. If you are looking for some serenity amidst all the noise, join us for this service of song, prayer, and silence surrounded by incense and candlelight.
Children's Christmas Pageant
The Prophets Foretell
December 24, 3:00pm on the Labyrinth
The culmination of our season with the prophets will be a fun and poignant Christmas Eve pageant at 3 o'clock. Written by Melody Shobe, The Prophets Foretell beautifully connects the hope of the ancient prophets with the babe born in Bethlehem. Toddlers through grade 5 are invited to participate in this beloved Christmas tradition.
This service of Holy Eucharist is especially appropriate for our youngest members and their families.
Christmas Eve
Celebrate the miracle of God sending his only begotten Son to be our savior and redeemer. We'll glorify Christ in four beautiful services on Christmas Eve.
A Carol Prelude will begin 30 minutes before these services.
5:00pm | Before you sit down to Christmas Eve dinner, share in the beauty and holiness of a Eucharist featuring our two youth choirs. Childcare is available by our professional nursery staff for infants through 4-years old.
8:00pm | The Transfiguration Choir leads this joyful Eucharist. Childcare is available by our professional nursery staff for infants through 4-years old.
Christmas Day
December 25, 10:00am
After the grandeur of Christmas Eve, our Eucharist on Christmas morning feels intimate and peaceful. The Prologue of St. John's gospel reminds us that the one born in Bethlehem was the one through whom all things came into being, and the music features a chamber choir and voluntaries for organ and trumpet by Joel Martinson.
Second Sunday of Christmas
Saturday, January 3, 5:30pm &
Sunday, January 4, 9:00am & 11:15am
The Twelve Days of Christmas include two Sundays, providing more time to sing and pray with hope and joy. Between Sunday services we welcome back the "Wise Guys" on their way to offer their gifts to the Holy Family at Epiphany.
The Epiphany
Tuesday, January 6, 7:00pm
The celebration of the Incarnation concludes with a final festival Eucharist. Christ came not only for one people or nation, but to be the Light of all people. The service concludes with the traditional Burning of the Greens beneath the Belltower.
