Barbara "Babs" DeLizza

I am Barbara DeLizza and am married to Frank for almost 47 years. We have three adult children and four grandchildren. We moved to Texas 28 years ago for Frank's work and have been here since. We reside in McKinney and have been at the Fig for 14 years. I am retired from social work and now spend my time volunteering and friends and family. We love to travel and try to see as much of the world as we can. The Fig is a very important part of my life, and I love it and its wonderful people and staff. Frank and I are originally from New York, this is home now, and the Fig is so much a part of it. The opportunity to serve on the Vestry would be an honor and privilege.

Professional Life and Activities

Occupation (or occupation before retirement):

  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (Retired)

Community and Professional Activities:

The majority of my community and professional life was involved with social work in health care settings, My work working with patients, families and outside organizations and resources. I spent most of my career in hospitals and interfacing with home care and community resources. My work was primarily with adults, however I also worked in women's and children's services and in Neonatal ICU. Medical social work requires you to listen and connect, advocate and assist and help people find the resources and resolutions and needed for their specific issues. I believe the Mission and Ministries committee of the Church is most similar to my background. A desire to hear and know the needs of the congregation and it's Outreach partners is so very important. Understanding resources and financial needs are an important part of providing for others. Many organizations and agencies have limited resources, therefore requiring creative ways to work around. This is important. I feel any group can participate in serving others and the church is an example of this. Discernment, collaboration and prayer are the avenue by which we can fulfill our mission.

Gifts, Talents and Experience:

My professional life became exactly what I believed my personal life should be given my gifts and talents. I believe my desire to be welcoming, inclusive and hospitable are who I am and strive to be. My experiences as President of Daughters of The King have helped me to be more encouraging, patient and supporting. My experiences teaching English as a second language has given me insight into the world of people from other cultures. My experience as a Special Education Assistant has given me understanding of different learning styles and how to mentor effectively. I feel I have been blessed to be a person who is able to serve others.

It is a great privilege to be at a church where there are so many opportunities to find what one is called to do.

What drew you?:

I have served in many roles in this church and others. This is a ministry I have never served in, but I feel now that I could be an effective member of Vestry. I will be stepping down from the DOK President's role where I have learned so much about leadership, mentoring and problem-solving. It is a new experience for me but I am familiar with Vestry having served and been involved in the Episcopal Church and the Nominating Committee. I feel to would be an honor and a privilege to serve this church in this way and to the greater church and community,

Formation and Inspiration:

In addition to worship, I attend formation classes when able. I participate in Daughters of The King prayer and service projects. I attend foyer dinner groups and enjoy meeting new people. I love to read and participate in an active Book Club that is always insightful and interesting I also love music and support Fig Music Ministry and attend local music and theater. At home I read several devotional materials and spend quiet time alone. Frank and I love to travel and find it broadens the mind and spirit. Being with family and friends always reminds me of the many blessings that inspire my faith. I feel it would be an honor and privilege to serve this church in this way and to the greater church and community.

What drew you?:

I've loved Transfiguration from the moment I set foot in the building. I love the people, the ministers and message. I want to make sure others feel as strongly about the Fig as I do.

Formation and Inspiration:

My grandmother heavily influenced my spirituality but I've always accepted that we originated from a higher power. Emily grew up in the Episcopal church but I'd drifted between Methodist and Baptist faiths as a youth. Following September 11, we committed to regular church attendance and have been consistent churchgoers since.

Jan Waller

I am a Cradle Fig. Transfiguration is the village that raised me. In the 1960s, I attended school on the Transfiguration campus back before PES was founded. I have vivid memories of Fthr. Niles leading us in morning chapel. He would pace in front of us and in his booming voice ask, "Where is God?!", cueing our enthusiastic response, "EVERYWHERE!!" Fifty plus years later, my beliefs haven't changed. God is everywhere and in everyone. And God is overwhelmingly present at Transfiguration! I am humbled to have the opportunity to serve on our vestry.

Professional Life and Activities

Occupation (or occupation before retirement):

  • Retired Kindergarten, reading teacher in Richardson ISD

Community and Professional Activities:

I wore many hats in my teaching days, developing qualities that would be beneficial in a team dynamic, such as the vestry. I have strong listening and observation skills. I am flexible and welcome change. As an Instructional Specialist, my job was very focused on data and student achievement. I can read and analyze spreadsheets. However, I prefer more active committee work. (MMC!)

A favored staff development was training in the FISH Philosophy. Its principles are simple but reliable in many settings. They are: make their day; play; choose your attitude; be present. These principles will continue to be beneficial in my Outreach work but also vestry and committee tasks.

Gifts, Talents and Experience:

I'm excited about Transfiguration's outreach initiative. I'm ready to be hands-on in current and future efforts for our surrounding community. While teaching, the majority of my work was with economically disadvantaged children. I piloted a split day schedule working half of the day as a first grade Reading Recovery teacher. The second half of the day I taught "at risk" Kindergarten students. My task was to front load my K. students with early reading strategies. This program proved successful. I continued to be a "hybrid" teacher for several years. Recently when Babs DeLizza suggested our DOK chapter provide books for the Transfiguration Food Pantry, I jumped at the chance to chair our book drive. I enjoyed collecting and matching books to children. Judging by the little ones' faces, it was a success! I would like to help build Transfiguration's relationship with our neighboring schools.

What drew you?:

I never considered being a vestry member. I thought vestry members were only business oriented people. Encouragement from fellow DOK members helped me to realize it takes many viewpoints to form an effective vestry. I'm excited to build on Transfiguration's Outreach initiative – caring for our neighbors.

Formation and Inspiration:

I follow the DOK Rule of Life which includes prayer. Before heading to work, I read an entry from Forward Day by Day, followed by a prayer. Compline is a favorite evening prayer. I save studying the Bible for afternoons. I admit to frequenting New Testament chapters more than Old Testament. I love the quietness of Lent. Wednesday night Lenten programs inspire me to paint or sketch as I reflect on the evening's content. I usually participate at Lenten Journey offered on our campus. This Lent, I was led through a lectio divina exercise on Quiet Day at St. John's parish. This training helped me to slow down, quiet my mind and listen more carefully to God's word. We ended by gathering our thoughts and composing our own prayers.

Personal Vision for the relationship of Transfiguration to the Diocese of Dallas

What do you see as strengths and areas for improvement in this relationship?

I've long felt that Transfiguration has been considered–along with Ascension and St. Thomas–the black sheep of the Diocese. I would like to see the Fig become more integrated in the life of the diocese without compromising any of its firmly and sincerely held beliefs.

Are there areas of Diocesan life in which Transfiguration should be more involved?

I have no position on this question at the present time.

Personal Vision for the relationship of Transfiguration to the Diocese of Dallas

What do you see as strengths and areas for improvement in this relationship?

With the upcoming consecration of our Bishop-Elect, the Very Rev. Rob Price, I hope and believe that we may begin to heal the rifts between us and our Diocese that have arisen from The Fig's conscious and continual commitment to the radical inclusion and acceptance of all Christ's beloved.

Are there areas of Diocesan life in which Transfiguration should be more involved?

Yes. ALL of them! We have a voice and vision we need to share in and with our diocese. But when we choose not to participate in, or are excluded from, the life of our Diocese, we lose our opportunity to help EDOD open the doors of God's house to all.

Personal Vision for the relationship of Transfiguration to the Diocese of Dallas

What do you see as strengths and areas for improvement in this relationship?

Transfiguration represents the diversity that is present throughout the Episcopal Church, and I believe in EDOD. We need to continue our witness to that in EDOD. I believe that with the election of Rob Price as Bishop Coadjutor we have the opportunity to bring EDOD back together as one diocese.

Are there areas of Diocesan life in which Transfiguration should be more involved?

Continued witness to the diversity that is present at Transfiguration and EDOD. Become more involved in diocesan racial reconciliation activities and ministry in South Dallas.

Personal Vision for the relationship of Transfiguration to the Diocese of Dallas

What do you see as strengths and areas for improvement in this relationship?

Strengths include our continuing interface with the Diocese. Our relationship has been strained, however, due to disagreement with our Bishop regarding gay marriage. It was somewhat eased when the Bishop allowed for us to conduct the marriages under another Bishop.

Are there areas of Diocesan life in which Transfiguration should be more involved?

Not to my knowledge.

Personal Vision for the relationship of Transfiguration to the Diocese of Dallas
What do you see as strengths and areas for improvement in this relationship?

The Fig is a strong church, with a great community, and volunteer base. We do a lot of good work within our parish and in the community. Partnering with other churches in the Diocese could expand our good work and provide opportunities to find places of agreement.

Are there areas of Diocesan life in which Transfiguration should be more involved?

I don't personally know, but from their website, it looks like the Fig could bring a lot more to the Diocese. With the exception of the community of all the parishes in the Diocese. However, I am curious about the possibilities.
