Lent & Holy Week at Transfiguration
Since ancient times, Christians have prepared for Easter during a 40-day season of repentance called Lent. It's the time of year when we take a careful look at everything that fills our lives, and ask ourselves, plainly and simply, if these things are helping us love God with all our heart, mind, and strength, and love our neighbors as ourselves. It's that basic and also that hard.
Throughout this Lent, we are focusing on the false idols that demand our worship and devotion. We welcome an all-star lineup of speakers to help us be on the lookout for a few of these false idols during our Wednesdays in Lent. We invited you to join us because in troubling and complicated times, it's essential that we put the fullness of our faith, love, and devotion in the only one who truly deserves it: God.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS | 5:00pm
You are invited to the solemnly beautiful liturgy of Stations of the Cross each Wednesday in Lent at 5:00 p.m. The service traces the final hours of Christ's life, from his condemnation by Pilate to his burial in the tomb, and involves prayers and readings from Scripture as we move from image to image around the church. This is a perfect preparation for the Eucharist that follows.
HOLY EUCHARIST | 6:00pm
Make a midweek Eucharist a regular part of your Lenten observance. Each Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. we celebrate the Eucharist, and during Lent these services include music and instead of our regular homilies there will be brief meditations on components of Andre Rublev's classic icon, The Trinity. We also offer unction (anointing with holy oil) afterward.
LENTEN FELLOWSHIP MEAL | 6:30pm
You are invited to join us Roper Hall for a light Lenten dinner of soup, salad, and bread after our Wednesday Eucharist. Each week at 6:30pm a different ministry group will host dinner, giving you an opportunity to gather with fellow parishioners and meet ministry leaders.
MODERN IDOL GUEST SPEAKER | 7:00pm
Join us for an outstanding slate of guest speakers who will help us explore the Idols that compete for our worship and devotion in our modern life. The slate of guest speakers is detailed below. If you miss a session, you can view recorded classes here.
COMPLINE | 8:00pm
The Wednesday evening program in Lent concludes with the service of sung Compline at 8:00 pm in the church. This is a simple yet beautiful service from the ancient church intended for the close of the day. Members of the Transfiguration Choir help lead the singing, and it lasts about 15 minutes. This service of Complain will be streamed on both Facebook and YouTube in place of our regular online Compline office. [ Click here to View ]
The Idol of Politics
March 25 | 7:00pm
Brian Zahnd, Author and Sr. Pastor of Word of Life Church, St. Joseph, MO
Jesus was political. He advocated for the vulnerable, condemned injustice, and opposed empire. For Christians, faith informs politics. But for many today, their politics drives their faith, rather than the other way around, and political party is more important than church.
Pastor Zahnd is a pastor, theologian, and author of eleven books. After coming to faith in the 1970's, he founded Word of Life Church. In the midst of prayer and service, Zahnd's faith was publicly transformed by the conviction that Jesus deserved a better church. Today, Zahnd's ministry embraces Christianity's "Great Tradition."

Palm Sunday
Saturday, March 28 at 5:30pm
Sunday, March 29 at 9:00am & 11:15am
Holy Week begins amidst palms. All four gospels depict Jesus entering Jerusalem atop a humble donkey as the crowds cried "Hosanna (save us)," and our liturgy follows their example with a festive procession from the bell tower garden into the church. The mood of the service quickly shifts as we hear the story of Jesus' passion and death. The tension between "Hosanna" and "Crucify him" marks this holy beginning to the holiest of weeks, when we walk the way of the cross and find it none other than the way of life and peace.

The Passion Experience for Families at 6:00pm
The children of Transfiguration and their families are invited to experience an amazing and thought-provoking Easter journey together. On this family mini retreat, you will experience the excitement surrounding Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem, the significance of the Last Supper, the darkness at Gethsemane, the confusion of Good Friday, the silence of Holy Saturday and the Joy of Easter. Families will walk together from station to station, experiencing this journey that provides opportunities to discuss their faith. We ask families attending to bring a picnic blanket that will be used at each station. We will share a special meal with Jesus and his disciples. Childcare provided. Please register for this event to help with our planning. Click here to register.
Tenebrae at 7:00pm
An adaptation of ancient monastic liturgy that features the slow extinguishment of candles and the haunting beauty of chanted psalms and laments.
The Triduum
Maundy Thursday begins the three holiest holy days of the year, and it features several unique rituals performed at no other time. The service centers on the Last Supper, when our Lord instituted the Eucharist and when he washed his disciples' feet. It was a living example of the loving humility he commanded (maundy, from the Latin for commandment) us to show one another. The service ends by processing the Sacrament to Holy Cross Chapel for an all-night vigil and the dramatic Stripping of the Altar in a darkened church.

Special Note: Bring loaves of bread and/or bottles of wine for Maundy Thursday (April 2 | 7:00pm). The bread is donated to Austin Street Center, and the wine is uncorked after the Great Vigil.
Following the Service through Noon Friday
You are invited to help us keep vigil through the night before the Blessed Sacrament in Holy Cross Chapel. Volunteers may register to keep watch for an hour, in keeping with Christ's invitation to his disciples to stay awake with him (Matthew 26:36-45). This is a powerful time of intimate spiritual connection to the Lord. Click here to sign-up to keep watch
Good Friday
April 3
12:00noon | Veneration of the Cross
The Triduum continues on Friday, when we remember the ultimate saving sacrifice of Christ. He stretched his arms wide upon the hard wood of the cross, taking upon himself the sin and suffering of the world. The power of evil and death was broken forever by the power of love supreme. The liturgy of Good Friday features the sung Passion of St. John, and also includes gorgeous music, ancient prayers, and veneration of the cross. At the Noon service, the Sacrament venerated through the previous night is consumed in quiet reverence. A poignant and interactive afternoon liturgy appropriate for children is held outdoors.
For over 100 years, the Episcopal Church has collected a special offering on Good Friday to support our witness in the Holy Land. These funds serve churches, schools, and hospitals throughout the region, including in Gaza. Help us show solidarity with the Christians who still bear faithful witness in the places where Christ lived, died, and rose again. Click here to donate.
The Great Vigil of Easter
Saturday, April 4 | 8:00pm
The Great Vigil of Easter is the climax of the Triduum and the pinnacle of the year. The liturgy follows the pattern of the earliest Christians, who would keep watch through the night and meditate on the mighty acts of God. It begins in darkness, out of which a new fire is kindled, symbolizing the light of Christ's risen life. Then, illumined by candles, the service continues with Scripture, music, and prayers, culminating in baptism. Finally the first Alleluia is proclaimed, the lights come on, and Easter joy rings out in glory.
Break the Fast Celebration
Following the joyous celebration of Christ's Resurrection, it is tradition at The Fig that we continue our celebration in fellowship with one another at our Break the Fast Celebration. You are invited to contribute to this festive event. Sign-up to Bring Food or Make a Monetary Contribution. Please note that volunteers are needed to help with set up, serving during the party, and clean up. Click here to volunteer.
Easter Day
Sunday, April 5 | 9:00am & 11:15am
Special Children's Easter Eucharist | 9:30am
Butterfly Release | 10:30am
Easter Day is the ultimate Christian celebration. As the ancient song proclaims, "Christ has risen from the dead, trampling down death by death and bringing life to all in the tomb." Our worship focuses on the triumph of our Lord over sin, evil, and death. The music is grand, the church is adorned in splendor, and our hearts are lifted in thanksgiving to the one who rose so that we, too, may live.
Special Children's Easter Eucharist at 9:15am
In addition to our two principal services at 9:00am and 11:15am, we celebrate a special Eucharist for children in Roper Hall, featuring our youth choirs.
Butterfly Release
In the midst of the morning at 10:30am, we release butterflies – winged symbols of the resurrection – beneath the bell tower.
Transfiguration will once again give away the entirety of the collection at Easter, and this year's designated recipients are Aunt Bette's Community Pantry at St. Philip's School and Community Center in south Dallas, and La Colectiva NTX, an organization supporting migrants and their families facing detainment and deportation. Help us not only praise the Lord for the Resurrection but also witness to his resurrection power through acts of love!
