Transfiguration will soon host an annual retreat specially designed to prepare children for their first formal communion. This retreat will take place Sunday, April 19 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. in the Children’s Gathering Room. The child and at least one parent must attend the retreat in order to participate in the First Informed Communion recognition ceremony on Sunday, April 26 during the 9:00 a.m. service. Children must be baptized in order to receive a certificate and participate in the service.

Many of our parish children are already receiving communion, so, for them, this retreat will provide some background for what they have been doing and allow a formal recognition of their participation in this important sacrament. The children will learn more about baptism, Eucharist and church membership. We will tour the Vesting Sacristy and Altar Guild Sacristy. Participants will practice receiving the Eucharist with a priest.

The First Informed Communion service will be a special day for your child and to mark the occasion, a gala reception will follow, in the Cloister Garden. All parents, siblings and special guests are invited. A separate invitation will be sent to your home.

A brief note on attire for the service: White is the traditional color for girls clothing. Boys may want to wear suits and ties. However, the choice of attire is up to you and your child and there is no requirement or need to purchase special clothing for the occasion. The important thing is the event itself.

We will have a group of clergy, staff and parents leading this retreat. If you would like your baptized, first grade child to participate, please email Suzanne Finan, Director of Children’s Ministries.
