The Great Vigil of Easter is the climax of the Triduum and the pinnacle of the year. The liturgy follows the pattern of the earliest Christians, who would keep watch through the night and meditate on the mighty acts of God. It begins in darkness, out of which a new fire is kindled, symbolizing the light of Christ’s risen life. Then, illumined by candles, the service continues with Scripture, music, and prayers, culminating in baptism. Finally the first Alleluia is proclaimed, the lights come on, and Easter joy rings out in glory.
