Michael Durrance

Raised as a Methodist in Denton, Texas, I was confirmed at Transfiguration in 2016, being guided to the Episcopal faith through, of all things, an online quiz on Google! As a Certified Specialist of Wine, I began my service to the parish at the Break the Fast Feast, and I have enjoyed the opportunity to work with EMF and other members of the church to show the Fig’s wonderful hospitality to members and guests at various events.

Currently, I am the co-lead of St. Elizabeth’s Guild, and I also serve on the Outreach

Professional Life and Activities

Occupation (or occupation before retirement):

Scrum Master for Bank of America. I organize two software teams who send out digital alerts for most of our bank products.

Community and professional activities, emphasizing those areas of your expertise which are particularly relevant to the Vestry’s three principal committees (Mission and Ministry; Budget, Finance and Administration; Building, Grounds and Technology) (300 words max):

I serve as the Travel and Education Chairman of the Grapevine Wine Pouring Society. The society serves as advocates of the Texas wine industry and offers service and education around the state. In my chairmanship, I arrange for our monthly guest speakers and arrange for educational missions. Last year, I chaired an ad hoc committee to revise the Society’s bylaws.

In addition to your professional expertise described above, what gifts, talents and experience would you bring to the Vestry? (300 words max):

As a Scrum Master, my job requires that I facilitate communication among many different teams and organized dozens of concurrent projects. The role gives me a unique style of leadership, one that defines me as a servant leader rather than a taskmaster or manager. In our methodology, the team does not have a designated leaders, but each person serves a particular place on the team.

What drew you to consider Vestry leadership and what excites you about this possibility? (250 words max)

Being nominated to Vestry was an answered prayer. Having settled the rebirth of St. Elizabeth’s, I had been looking for my next opportunity to serve the church, considering several different ministries’ time commitments and the skill I could bring to them.

I have learned that anything that is less than 10 years old as the Fig is still considered “new,” so in many’s eyes, I just joined the church! That said, I’m excited about bringing fresh ideas and new perspective to the Vestry, having grown up neither in our parish or as an Episcopal. As the Transfiguring our Foundations campaign completes in the next two years, we will be primed to launch innovative programs and give even greater offering to our members. I look forward to dreaming about and implementing new possibilities.

In addition to worship services, what do you do to form and inspire your faith? (250 words max)

I have struggled to answer this one—I’ll confess I have had a difficult year spiritually, having to leave home suddenly and find new friends, and leaning and reconnecting with old ones. I mentioned that this nomination was an answered prayer: the prayer being “What now, Lord?” David’s surprise as I came out of church was definitely a call.

The most important thing I do to inspire my faith is to serve the church—we have such a Christ-centered community, that when there’s a need for a soup kit or some heavy lifting to do, I pitch in. I think that most important aspect of any Christian’s faith should be to answer the call to serve.

Brian Ferrell

I was born in Tyler, TX, and raised in the Southern Baptist tradition by a Baptist mother and a non-practicing Presbyterian father. I attended Baylor University and ultimately decided that the Baptist church was not the place for me. I was fortunate to find the Episcopal church when living in New Jersey. The expression of faith in the Episcopal church felt closer to my understanding of the gospel than anything I had yet experienced, and I was confirmed by the bishop of Newark. My ex-wife and I raised our children at Transfiguration (divorced in 2020). I am truly blessed to part of this open, caring, and generous parish.

In addition to your professional expertise described above, what gifts, talents and experience would you bring to the Vestry? (300 words max):

Results and decision oriented.

Analytical approach.

Interested in the health of the parish which I believe derives from the spiritual health of the parishioners.

What drew you to consider Vestry leadership and what excites you about this possibility? (250 words max)

I am honored to have been asked to consider vestry service. If the committee and this parish I care so much about thinks I can be of help I would be honored to serve in this capacity.

In addition to worship services, what do you do to form and inspire your faith? (250 words max)

My morning routine includes a gratitude journal and morning daily devotional from BCP. This has lapsed since I got a puppy about a month ago, so trying to figure out how to reintegrate that practice.

Olga Ruff

I was born in McKeesport, PA. When I was 14 years old, my family moved to Texas. My father’s job (he was a Metallurgical Mechanical Field Engineer for United States Steel) allowed us to live in many cities across Texas. I attended Texas Tech University, eventually graduating from the University of Texas School of Nursing with Honors. In 1974, I met my future husband, Mike, on a blind date when I was a young CCU nurse at Baylor Hospital in Dallas, and we married the following year. We lived in Galveston for three years, where I was a nurse employed in several units at UTMB – a teaching hospital. We moved to North Carolina in 1978 for Mike’s post-graduate medical training at Duke, where I was in charge of the Nursing Learning Resource Center at Duke Medical Center. In 1980, Mike and I attended the St. Philip’s Episcopal Church Inquirer’s Class in Durham and have been practicing Episcopalians since then. Our daughter Ashley was born in 1981, and I devoted my time to supporting her many activities and athletic adventures. She has since blessed us with three wonderful grandchildren. I have traveled to over 14 foreign countries and have more on my “to visit” list. I enjoy hiking with my girlfriends in the Santa Fe National Forest every fall, playing Bridge (two groups for over 20-30 years), playing Canasta, creating jewelry, fusing glass, and dancing. I do not sing, cook, or write.

In addition to your professional expertise described above, what gifts, talents and experience would you bring to the Vestry? (300 words max):

I possess strong organizational skills, enjoy leadership responsibilities, and work well with others. I have served on numerous non-profit boards developing communication skills and the ability to be flexible and learning the importance of compromise. My work ethic is strong and my energy level is high. If I commit to a project, I will complete it. I have experience in both financial and technology areas in previous volunteer positions. Currently, I am completing a Google Drive for future AG Directors. This drive will contain pertinent Altar Guild information (e.g., “how-to” checklists, budgets, inventory, vendors) and a similar drive for Transfiguration Altar Guild Members that will include Training Material, Checklists for all church services, and scheduling information. I am creative and love to work with my hands (jewelry design, sewing, etc.)

What drew you to consider Vestry leadership and what excites you about this possibility? (250 words max)

Foremost is my love for Transfiguration, a church that genuinely seeks to Serve Christ in ALL people. I am incredibly proud of our church’s love and inclusiveness for everyone, and I desire to see our church grow so that we may reach and serve more people in our community. Secondly, my three-year position as Altar Guild Dirctor is coming to a close. During this time, I have had the opportunity to intimately experience “up-close” what is required to prepare for, budget for, and maintain all three areas of our Sacristy. With the upcoming Church/Sacristy renovations, I know what is necessary to help steer this process in a purposeful and cost-effective direction. I feel I would be most valuable in helping guide this project to completion.

In addition to worship services, what do you do to form and inspire your faith? (250 words max)

Most days begin and end with the Morning Office and Evening Prayer through Forward Movement. In addition, I am an active member of the Daughters of the King and Prayer Chain, which requires daily intercessory prayers. I attend Centering Prayer on Thursdays. I love all types of Bible Study. I Zoom-in on Transfiguration Sunday Formation Classes and have been a three-year member of Transfiguration Disciple Bible Study Class. Other community Bible studies I have attended are Bible Study Fellowship (4 years), First United Methodist Church Bible Study (3 years), and Community Bible Study (5 years). Also, I am highly fortunate to be attending my second pilgrammage with Transfiguration to The Holy Land this October 2023.

I have heard it said, that Vestry is where Faith meets Structure, where character matters and where my leadership counts. It would be another way that I can give back to my church community. I will be a dedicated leader and will influence and lead where I am able to. I have extensive business skills that I can bring to the table.

What drew you to consider Vestry leadership and what excites you about this possibility? (250 words max)

I love our church family and feel strongly that you have to pay back and serving on Vestry would be a way for me to demonstrate my love and commitment to our church. I do believe that you need to have a very healthy Christian spiritual life and that we need to bring that belief to Vestry. It’s spiritual work that needs to be done to protect the church and ensure that it says strong and vibrant. I am always looking for ways to serve and to improve the experience of our members. Above all, I accept the responsibility to work, study and pray with the Vestry in order to continue to advance our church.

I participate in bible study groups and spiritual growth classes. I am an aspiring reader and read lots about what is going on in the Episcopal Church and in other churches as I strive to understand the different religions and beliefs. I believe that we can learn from other groups, even if we don’t believe in their core beliefs. I am a person of prayer and strive to be diligent in my prayers for God’s mission as it is being lived out in our parish community. Faith is something that needs constant focused attention and you have to be grateful for all the gifts that you have received. I am happiest when I am helping others.

Personal Vision for the relationship of Transfiguration to the Diocese of Dallas

What do you see as strengths and areas for improvement in this relationship?

Transfiguration has a unique position to continue to be an influencer of change in the Diocese of Dallas while showing parishioners that healthy disagreement is acceptable and challenges us all to be better Christians. Transfiguration is the vessel of change.

Are there areas of Diocesan life in which Transfiguration should be more involved?

We as a parish are making a difference, and we must not lose heart. We must continue to take our seat at the table and be the voice for the hurt, unsupported, or unaffirmed.

We are known by our fruits and Transfiguration lives and breathes it.

Personal Vision for the relationship of Transfiguration to the Diocese of Dallas

What do you see as strengths and areas for improvement in this relationship?

Transfiguration and the Diocese are generally aligned but not always in agreement. The position Transfiguration takes on any issue is based on biblical principles, inclusion, and love. Transfiguration has, and should, continue to serve as a beacon for understanding and strength to make a safe space for all peoples.

A relationship with the Diocese provides a place of fellowship and community but as in any community, discussion and communication are tools for understanding and growth and we at Transfiguration should continue to strive to fulfill that role opportunity and obligation to be heard, lean, and teach.

Are there areas of Diocesan life in which Transfiguration should be more involved?

Personal Vision for the relationship of Transfiguration to the Diocese of Dallas

What do you see as strengths and areas for improvement in this relationship?

I think it was answer to many prayers when the diocese agreed to name Bishop Smith as bishop overseeing Pastoral Care. In spite of the differences between Transfiguration and Bishop Sumner, we must remember our mission and show Bishop Sumner warmth and hospitllity when he visits the Fig.

Are there areas of Diocesan life in which Transfiguration should be more involved?

I believe that Transfiguration’s Racial Justice Ministry and DOK chapter should be more involved in the Diocese. There are excellent leaders in each of these groups who could make a valuable difference in the life of the Diocese.

Personal Vision for the relationship of Transfiguration to the Diocese of Dallas

What do you see as strengths and areas for improvement in this relationship?

I believe we can embrace the Diocesan mission: to restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ and the Diocesan emphasis on Holy Orders.

The big area that needs improvement is the diocesan position on same sex marriage.

Are there areas of Diocesan life in which Transfiguration should be more involved?

Transfiguration could be involved more deeply  in Diocesan level meetings, such as Daughters of the King and other events and training opportunities.

Personal Vision for the relationship of Transfiguration to the Diocese of Dallas

What do you see as strengths and areas for improvement in this relationship?

Transfiguration has a bumpy relationship with the Dallas Diocese. For that reason, we need good delegates and good representation at the Convention in order to serve our continued role of dissent in many areas, while working for better relations in the future. Our strength is our continued witness and success in what is view as an alternate way of practicing our faith liturgically and missionally.

Are there areas of Diocesan life in which Transfiguration should be more involved?

We do a good job staying involved, in my opinion. We could always be more involved but I think there is some resistance there due to the strained nature of the relationship.

Personal Vision for the relationship of Transfiguration to the Diocese of Dallas

What do you see as strengths and areas for improvement in this relationship?

I think Transfiguration should continue to have a strong presence in the Diocese of Dallas, assuming that one day we will be under the pastoral care of the Bishop of Dallas once again. I think that our progressive stances are a strength, as we can lead by example. I do not know how we can improve, because I am not very familiar with our current relationship to the Diocese of Dallas (outside the obvious)

I cannot speak to this (yet)

Personal Vision for the relationship of Transfiguration to the Diocese of Dallas

What do you see as strengths and areas for improvement in this relationship?

In terms of the National Church, we are one of the only churches in the Diocese of Dallas that reflects the values and actions of most Episcopal Churches nationwide. We are rightly proud of this status as the loyal opposition to certain policies of the diocese, and I believe that we need to continue to emphasize our open and welcoming presence to all.

Personal Vision for the relationship of Transfiguration to the Diocese of Dallas
What do you see as strengths and areas for improvement in this relationship?

I was on the Vestry when the determination was made to change our pastoral oversight outside of the Diocese of Dallas and was fully supportive of that decision. I continue to believe that was (and continues to be) the right decision although I would like for us to continue to look for ways to strengthen our relationship with other Episcopal parishes in the Diocese of Dallas!

Are there areas of Diocesan life in which Transfiguration should be more involved?

No specific areas to identify at this time.
