Workshop of Wonders, Transfiguration’s 2014 Vacation Bible School program has come to an end, but the excitement and energy from it continues. 75 kids and at least that many adult/teen volunteers spent hours last week hearing bible stories and exploring their faith through games, science experiments, music and art. The hallways were bustling with activity, as kids worked their way through a huge maze covering most of the labyrinth or dropped ping-pong balls down the chute of a large ball drop game in the stairwell.

The music, which is now locked in my mind on a ceaseless loop, is the key to keeping the community upbeat and moving. I didn’t need a cup of java to get my blood going each morning; instead I joined a room full of children moving to the groove of our theme song, “Workshop of Wonders!” The words were sung at lightening speed and the movements were snappy. I imagine everyone present for the opening session each day left either fully energized or exhausted. Either way, it was all good.

VBS is one of my favorite programs, in large part because of the time I get to spend with the volunteers who draw, cut, paint and create before, during and after the event. But I would be lying if I said that was the biggest reason I get so much out of VBS. The true reward, for me, comes from the children. Their energy and enthusiasm are infectious. They live in a world of wonders, so a successful VBS means one that creates space for each participant to safely explore, engage and express their faith.

Each year, volunteers are tasked with one mission: Make sure all the children feel welcome and safe–all week. That’s not easy, as there are lots of needs that accompany a crowd of young children. But everyone tries his or her best and it usually works. This year was no exception. There were teens and adults all over campus who were willing to listen, help and anticipate needs. It was a beautiful thing to witness!

We know we can’t capture all the love, energy, and enthusiasm from VBS, but hopefully this short video gives you a taste!

G-Force_PrimaryAnd…..In case you were wondering…Vacation Bible School 2015 is already on the calendar. If you have a child who wants to participate, or if you want to share some of the adventure by volunteering next summer, go ahead and mark June 15-19 in your date book. The theme will be G-Force, God’s Love in Action.  I was lucky enough to be a part of the review team for the G-Force curriculum, so I’ve had an early advantage point and it is good. I’m imagining Tour de France decorations in our stairwell and so much more. The energy generated this year just keeps me moving toward the next. It is all GOOD!
