MINISTRIES OF MUSIC Sample Music Easter, From Five Mystical Songs mus: Ralph Vaughan Williams - Galaxy Music Adult Choir, John Hanby soloist The Day Thou Gavest, Lord, is Ended Adult Choir We are most blessed at Transfiguration to have a rich tradition for choirs of all ages which enables us to enrich the worship of our God in Sunday services and allows us to explore, teach, and celebrate our great Anglican heritage of music. The beginning of the school year in the fall is the usual time for joining choirs, yet we will take new members at most other times of the year as well. Please read the descriptions of the various ensembles below and feel free to contact the appropriate director via telephone or email for additional information. Participating in a musical ensemble at Transfiguration does take time, but the rewards are vast. You can delve into the depths of the creations of great poets and composers, and come out uplifted and enlightened. You can learn more about the liturgical and prayer life of the Anglican tradition and experience what Saint Augustine wrote: "Those who sing, pray twice." You can serve your sisters and brothers of the congregation by offering your voices in song and enriching their worship. All in all, being part of a choir is a journey of musical and spiritual proportions, in which you get to meet, work with, and know some our of wonderful and dedicated parishioners. Now are you excited? We hope to see you at a rehearsal soon! Call us ahead, in order that we may have your folder ready. Children’s Choirs We have two choirs for children: the Holy Family and Canticle Choirs. These choristers learn the fundamentals of choral singing as well as the music and worship traditions of the Episcopal Church. No musical experience or background is required for these choirs, though some members do have some music training from previous years in choirs here or elsewhere. The Holy Family Choir is for children in kindergarten through third grade and rehearses in the Building C choir room every Tuesday afternoon from 4-5 p.m.. The Canticle Choir, for students in fourth through seventh grades, rehearses on Sunday mornings from 11:10 a.m.- 12:10 p.m., in the Building C choir room. These choirs sing once a month at the 9:00 a.m. service, Advent Lessons and Carols, Christmas Eve and other occasions. Youth Choir The Jubilate Deo Choir is for teens in grades eight through twelve who love to sing and/or play an instrument. Though no musical experience or background is required for this choir, many members do have some training in choral, vocal or instrumental music. The choir rehearses from 11:10 a.m.-12: 10 p.m. on Sundays in the Youth Center. This choir sings approximately twice a month, normally at the 9:00 a.m. service, and at Advent Lessons and Carols, Christmas Eve and other occasions. They also will make a choir trip to a southwestern location in January. Transfiguration Choir (Adult) Our adult choir provides music for the two principal Sunday services, as well as for Holy Day liturgies. This season we will also sing some Sunday afternoon Evensong services and participate in the parish’s traditional Advent Lessons and Carols. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings from 7:30-9:15 p.m., with the choir dividing into two to sing either the 9:00 a.m. or 11:15 a.m. service. Because of the challenging repertoire we will undertake, it is very important - in addition to having a good voice for choral singing - to be able to read music and have previous musical experience. A hearing is also required in order to place choristers in sections and to give advice for work on individual vocal issues. Contact Joel Martinson, Music Director, at ext. 1115. Handbell Choir We presently have one handbell choir which is open to both adults and youth of the parish who read music and enjoy being part of a music ensemble. The bells rehearse on Tuesday evenings from 7:15-8:30 p.m. We currently have several openings for both full-time and substitute positions. It takes a number of good ringers to keep our 5 octaves of bells sounding. Please help us keep them ringing! Men’s Schola Cantorum The Men’s Schola is being reconfigured this year to accommodate other musical offerings. We will sing several Sunday evening Compline services as well as some Sunday morning Eucharists during the course of the year, with rehearsals to be determined by consultation with the membership. Please indicate your interest in joining this group to Joel Martinson. Belonging to another choir is helpful, but not required. Instrumentalists Please tell us if you have experience playing musical instruments, such as strings, winds, brass, percussion, piano, harpsichord and organ. A number of pieces in our choral library have instrumental parts, and we also like to enrich our worship services with instrumental offerings throughout the year. Choir Guild This Guild is for the parents and friends of our choir members. They assist in the extra-musical duties of the department. Vesting, Sewing, Office Volunteering, Music Library work, and Accompanying are some of the areas covered by this talented group of men and women. The Organ at Transfiguration
The organ at Transfiguration was the gift of the Robert Wylie family and was inaugurated in 1972. It was built by the Aeolian-Skinner Organ Company when Robert Sipe was its vice-president in charge of tracker instruments. Mr. Sipe was in charge of the entire design, voicing and finishing of the instrument. The organ was provided as an interim
instrument, until such time as a more complete instrument may be built for Transfiguration. At that time, the present organ can be moved to the future chapel.
