This coming weekend, October 25th and 26th,  we will be holding parish wide elections for Vestry Members and Convention Delegates. In order to participate in these elections you need to be a voting member of Transfiguration. I asked Ellen Dingwall to clarify what that means exactly and how you can become one! Here is a list of current vestry and delegates and check out the bulletin board and church bulletin to see who is running this year.

Every year for Parish Elections there seems to be confusion when people come to vote. Being a “voting” member requires that a person be a confirmed Episcopalian. That status is different than being a baptized member of the church and it is important to understand the distinction.

Confirmation is our informed response to the baptism promises that were made for us by the Christian community, our parents and sponsors at our baptisms when we were infants or children. Although baptism in any Christian denomination is valid and all that is needed for full membership and involvement in the life of the parish, it is still required by Canon law (church rules!) that a person must be a confirmed Episcopalian to vote in the parish elections.

This is not meant to be confusing or discriminating, this is meant to help the parish understand what they are voting for and what the roles of these leaders will be. In a confirmation class you will learn not only the church’s theological foundation but also gain an understanding of Canon law. Learning how the church is set up, how decisions are made, and more importantly why we adhere to these rules, is an integral part in being an Episcopalian!

If you are not yet a confirmed member, have no fear! We want you to become one and every year Father Michael Merriman and a wonderful group of volunteer “companions”  hold two sessions for adult confirmation. The classes are called “The Way” and are currently meeting Monday evenings in the Youth Center. The spring session will begin in January and take place on Sunday mornings during the adult formation hour. We now offer these sessions twice a year and at different times in hopes that at least one of them will fit into your schedule.

If you are currently a baptized member, or think you need a refresher course in Episcopalian-ism 101, please consider joining The Way and deepening your understanding of what it means to be a baptized Christian in this wonderful community we know as Transfiguration.  An added bonus is that you will be able to have a voice in choosing our lay leaders and who knows – perhaps you will want to become a member of the vestry or a convention delegate yourself someday!

For more information about adult confirmation, please contact Father Michael Merriman, mmerrimian@transfiguration.net   or Ellen Dingwall, edingwall@transfiguration.net
