Current estimates are that 71% of adults are on Facebook. It is where we are and where the church is too. (I apologize to the 29% of you that may be reading this). If your Facebook feed looks like mine -it may be bogged down in a myriad of political arguments, selfies, quizzes (Just how Texan are you anyway?) Over the years I find myself hiding more and more content not to get too dragged into the worst of social media. Fortunately there are a few people and groups that I follow that vastly improve my Facebook feed – sometimes with humor, sometimes with prayer and sometimes just with the realness of it all. Here are some of my favorites that I hope will improve your Facebook feed too!
On the lighter side – Episcopal Church Memes is one of my favorites for a smile and sometimes a chuckle.
A great reminder of our worldwide community and the work that needs to be done and the amazing work that is being done is Episcopal Relief & Development– This feed often includes amazing stories of triumph and grace, like this story of an outpatient clinic in Ecuador, straight from the Diocese of Ecuador.
Always provocative is Radio Free Babylon’s Coffee with Jesus. These are daily posts with regular people, and occasionally satan, having coffee with a dry and frequently sarcastic Jesus. In addition to the comic strip, the conversation that these strips usually generate on Facebook are some of my favorite online interactions -even if sometimes I just read the conversations and don’t actually join in!
The Washington National Cathedral – Often stunning images of art and events at the Cathedral, and many on-point with current events. The events always make me wish we lived closer and could go more frequently. Often when I see the images I start planning our first family trip to the cathedral!
Unapologetically Episcopalian – A great resource for morning prayer, evensong, great conversation, and beautiful music. Sometimes just what is need for a quiet break in the day.
